Losing all your savings in an Exodus wallet

Over on r/ExodusWallet, user Medical-Calendar-916 put up a desperate post with the General Question flair. His crypto savings vanished from his Exodus wallet, and he's looking for answers and at least some sliver of a chance to get them back. He spotted the unauthorized transactions on October 13, 2026, even though the transfers themselves date back to September 27. He still has control of the wallet on his iPhone, but the money is long gone. It was his personal savings, money he depended on, and losing it has put him in a really rough spot.

According to the OP, nobody but him ever had access to the seed phrase and private keys — he never shared them or typed them into any sketchy sites. He used Jaxx for years without a single problem, switched to Exodus early this year — and less than a year later he's left with an empty wallet. He only opened it 4–5 times a year, just to check the funds were still there. No DeFi stuff at all. This time he logged in because he needed to move his savings — and found there was nothing left to move.

He does add that he doesn't want to accuse anyone without proof, but he points out that other people online have reported thefts from Exodus users too. He's already gotten in touch with Exodus support and reported the whole thing to the proper authorities.

The thread split into camps pretty fast. Some folks look for the explanation on the victim's side. DaddyDogmeat asked all the right questions: where was the seed phrase kept, did he approve any shady contract, which network, which DeFi services he used — and asked for the wallet address to see exactly how the funds got out. The OP replied that he couldn't recall anything suspicious and posted the transaction hashes on Bitcoin and Ethereum.

elononabudget got snarky, guessing the seed phrase was sitting in the Notes app. And redditUser9574 — who holds a big chunk of money in Exodus himself and admitted the comments are giving him the creeps — still can't wrap his head around how this is possible without the owner slipping up somewhere: did he click on emails pretending to be from Exodus, type his seed in anywhere, sync or verify the wallet because someone asked him to, or update via the website instead of the app?

The other camp says the problem is Exodus itself. RRR110RRR wrote that he's in the exact same boat — his wallet got drained down to nothing. According to him, there've been a ton of Exodus victims lately, he and the other victims have no digital trace of the seed anywhere, and how often this is happening points more to a problem with the product than with end users. He tells anyone who still has funds in Exodus to pull them out ASAP. FreedomReclaimed agreed 100 percent, adding that people in this subreddit hate hearing that and bury it in downvotes.

More evidence pointing the same way: No-Reading-4384 said his 12-word seed phrase always lived in a safe, he'd been in crypto for 10 years, and he got hit for $160k. UniversityHelpful823 reported that his wallet got drained on the exact same date, only his staked crypto survived, and the attackers even sent in ETH for gas — his comment "Exodus is garbage" speaks for itself. Timmbe02 also claimed his account got hijacked and that it's supposedly a security problem on Exodus's end. And Wanttosmellgood urged everyone to withdraw their funds, because quite a few people he know got drained thanks to a leak.

The practical answers in the thread are grim. From riggs818, short and sweet: your chances are zero, and anyone who says otherwise is a scammer. redditUser9574 expanded on that in a second comment: recovery is practically impossible — the attackers are almost certainly outside your jurisdiction and maybe not even in your country. In theory, you could trace the transactions to an exchange and make a stink, but that's a long shot — there are plenty of ways to launder funds through mixers before they ever hit an exchange. Crypto makes getting anything back nearly impossible. WoodpeckerCapital167 just went with: Welcome to crypto.

One side note from ah-hum, replying to the story about the sent gas: he quipped that in that case, receiving wallets should be required to approve incoming transfers — running out of ETH makes a pretty decent lock, after all.

It's important to separate facts from claims. There's exactly one fact here: the OP has transaction hashes on a public blockchain, and the transfers really did happen. Everything else — a mass Exodus breach, hacks with seeds in safes, drains all on the same date — is, for now, unverified word from anonymous users; it could be true, could be exaggeration, or could even be someone quietly laying the groundwork for new scams. The $160k-seed-in-a-safe story sounds dramatic, but there's no way to check it. The skeptics in the thread have a point too: in the overwhelming majority of drains, the cause is on the user's end — a compromised seed, phishing, a malicious contract approval. That said, the post itself is a good checklist for a situation like this: check the hashes in block explorers, contact support and the authorities, and whatever you do, don't reply to DMs from so-called recovery "specialists" — posts like this are the first place they flock to. If the wave of Exodus complaints really is picking up steam, it may be worth temporarily moving your assets to a different wallet and watching for official statements from the company.
